Senate wades into Alvan Ikoku College crisis
...As Unions shelve strike to accommodate further dialogue
The Nigerian Senate, through the Chairman Senate committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, Senator Samuel SamDaddy Anyanwu, has summoned the Management and union leaders of Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri to a meeting in Abuja, to wade into the leadership crisis rocking the institution and ensure the return of sanity to the institution.
The meeting became necessary in order to forestall a breakdown of law and order and to ensure a smooth running of the institution.
A brief meeting held in Owerri at the behest of Senator Anyanwu, over the last weekend indicates that the outgoing Provost, Dr. Blessing Ijioma claims she had been given a "letter of completion" which she failed to produce.
A quick check on the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), indicates that the parent regulatory body is not aware of such letter and the Secretary to the Minister of Education also denied seeing any such letter on her desk.
A grapevine source revealed that the so called letter being paraded by the Provost bears the signature of a certain Dr. Umar, who happens to be the Director of Human Resources in the ministry, who obviously is not the right authority in such matters.
Details of the meeting with the Senator and the Minister of Education is being awaited.
