Senate wades into Alvan Ikoku College crisis

...As Unions shelve strike to accommodate further dialogue The Nigerian Senate, through the Chairman Senate committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, Senator Samuel SamDaddy Anyanwu, has summoned the Management and union leaders of Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri to a meeting in Abuja, to wade into the leadership crisis rocking the institution and ensure the return of sanity to the institution. The meeting became necessary in order to forestall a breakdown of law and order and to ensure a smooth running of the institution. A brief meeting held in Owerri at the behest of Senator Anyanwu, over the last weekend indicates that the outgoing Provost, Dr. Blessing Ijioma claims she had been given a "letter of completion" which she failed to produce. ...As strike records 100% impact on day two Despite what looked like initial hitches occasioned by betrayals by some of the union leaders, which would have marred the entire struggle, if not quickly checked, the strike action embarked by the entire staff of Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri, has continue with full zest. Our reporter who visited the instruction confirmed that both academic and non academic staff of the institution had down tools and were on seat at press time. ...As management of the institution intensify effort to break the unions Following the expiration of the two weeks given to the Governing council of Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri, by the Nigerian Senate, to call the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the institution to a meeting and reach a truce on the raging issue involving the Provost of the College, Dr. Blessing Ijioma, the four unions in the institution, under the auspices of JAC had called a world press conference and announced that they will down tools. The industrial action, which commenced on Thursday 3rd of August, 2017 will last for a 7 day warning period, is likely to pave way to a full blown indefinite strike, if the lingering issues are not resolved before 9th of August, 2017. As the two weeks given to Governing council by Senate terminates Baring any last minute changes, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri, may declare industrial action anytime from tomorrow, 2nd day of August, 2017. 2nd of August, incidentally, is the supposed due date for the retirement of the Provost of the College, Dr. Mrs. Blessing Ijioma, having attained the ripe age of 65, and from the body language of the unions, strike looms. It can be recalled that two weeks ago, the Senate committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions had directed the Governing council of the institution to, within two weeks, summon a meeting with the unions and resolve the leadership impasse threatening the peace and stability of second generation citadel of learning. ...As Dr. Blessing Ijioma rips off staff to build war chest The last has not been heard about the scheming of the sit tight provost of Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri, Dr. Blessing Ijioma who would rather have the institution in crisis than quietly retire. The latest trick in the bag is that staff of the institution now receive 90% or less of their salaries as against what it used to be. Most of the staff who spoke on condition of anonymity, for fear of being hounded by security operatives, as has become the lot of most of the union leaders, lately, opined that it is glaring that the provost is using proceeds from the salary slash to fund her sit ambition.
