Today, the 25th day of April, 2017 will remain memorable in the lives of both inmates and visitors to Owerri Federal prisons, in so many ways. First because Hon. Deacon Chike Okafor chose to celebrate his wife Deaconess Akudo Okafor, on her birthday, among the inmates of the prison and offer free medicals to the over 2,300 inmates.
Again, because over 100 inmates regained their freedom, today, 20 of whom were are already out, while the rest may leave tomorrow, as soon as their papers are perfected. Their release was courtesy of Hon. Deacon Chike Okafor who paid the option of fine handed to them by the court, when they were sentenced.
Hon. Okafor also commenced free medical treatment for all the inmates, a programme which was flagged off by no less a person that the wife of the Imo State Governor, Nneoma Nkechi Rochas Okorocha, PhD. The programme will last till Saturday of whenever all the inmates have been attended to. The free medical outreach is in partnership with UNICEF and other international agencies, alongside Imo State Ministry of Health.
Speaking on the occasion, the prison comptroller, CP, Chris Okoye showered encomiums on Hon. Deacon Chike Okafor for his benevolence to the institution pointing out that Hon. Okafor has last year built and donated an ICT centre to the faculty and for urgent assistance for the sewage menace that the prison is facing, to this, the wife of the Governor promised to relate to her husband, the Governor, for prompt attention.
It was also a moment to inspire the hope of freedom to the inmates, as soon Ex-inmates whom had benefitted from Hon. Okafor's magnanimity of paying their option of fine to secure their release, had accompanied him on this visit. One of such persons, Mr. Chidiebere Mbachu (BB) from Agwa in Oguta was singled out for recognition, to inspire the inmates. He has been fully rehabilitated and empowered.
Several friends of Hon. Okafor, including Ndaa Jude Ejiogu, the immediate past Secretary to the Government of Imo State also made donations to support the payment of fines to secure the release of more inmates.
The long list of dignitaries present at the occasion include but not limited to the parents of Hon. Deacon Chike Okafor, Eze, Dr. and Lolo Ifeanyichukwu John Okafor, serving commissioners, innumerable men of God especially Rev. Barr. Austen Nnadi, Pastor and Mrs Ezeka, Pastor Kasie Ugo, Sir. Emma Bukar, Sir. Cajetan Eberendu, Prince Ik Okeke Management of Zenith Bank, Owerri, management of Mountain Crest Schools, team of medical personnel led by Dr. Mazi, political and religious leaders, just to mention a few.
Hon. Deacon Chike Okafor didn't fail to, in his usual way, sing and dance to the most high God.
